Sketch and Toon Review on Byte.com

David Em Reviews Sketch and Toon on this subscription only website.

"Sketch and Toon is an image rendering engine that bucks the trend toward ever more photorealistic computer images by producing pictures and animations that look hand drawn.

"You can develop your own Sketch styles from scratch… MAXON's provided a number of canned style presets to get you going.

"You can vary the thickness of a line across its length with randomized perturbations to give it a hand-drawn look.

"One very interesting shader is the Dot Shader that gives objects the look of halftone illustrations.

"Another very cool one is the Art Shader that extracts a complex painterly texture from a still image of a rendered sphere and applies it to a curved object.

"Although Sketch and Toon images look 2D, they operate in 3D space, producing highlights and casting shadows.

"Sketch and Toon's final renderings look like they're created by hand with traditional art tools. With comparatively little effort, architects can deliver nonphotorealistic architectural renderings of their proposed designs to their clients with almost no turnaround time.

"Small animation and video production houses can produce animations that in the past took dozens of skilled hands to create.

"This is cool stuff."
