Davidoff Cinema Spot

The studio, Sehsucht, was given the exciting opportunity to create a 50-second cinema spot for Davidoff brand tobacco.

In the spot, directed by Ivo Weigert, a reverse trip from one nightclub to another was to be created, covering a total of 600 to 1000 meters. To top it off, both clubs were located on the rooftops of high-rises.

During the trip, insurmountable obstacles had to be negotiated. The camera had to pass through panes of glass, an aquarium with baby sharks and a bathroom. Finally, the camera had to fly over a city, at dusk, from one club to another.

Actual filming took place in a large film studio in Budapest, Hungary. Here the interior of both clubs was designed and built - one with a bathroom, a lounge and part of the outer facade, and the other with a bar and dance floor - face-to-face in the studio. This let us set up a camera boom in the center of the studio that could be rotated to film either club.

After filming was complete the post-production work began.
All 3D work was done using CINEMA 4D. Several CINEMA 4D Studio Bundle modules were put through their paces.

After the reverse camera movements for both sets had been re-created in 3D space, Sehsucht artists combined them with the real-world camera movements. This can be seen in the flight over the city. Now all 3D work could be assigned accordingly.

Numerous renderings and passes were necessary to complete the flight through the aquarium in order to create an accurate reflection of each set. The baby sharks were animated using MOCCA and textured using BodyPaint 3D.

The flight over the city was split into two parts:
- The main high-rise on which the first club was located
- The complete city, including the Davidoff name

Since a small part of the main high-rise's facade had been included in the real-world filming we decided to use this imagery for the 3D high-rise. The rest of the building was created using CINEMA 4D.

For the flight over the city we used about forty high-rises from a catalog that were already modeled. Each high-rise was used multiple times, each textured differently. This allowed us to achieve the desired level of detail without having to model each high-rise.

To make the city look as realistic as possible, numerous renderings were made and several object channels were used, e.g. in order to edit window separately. We also used various dirt layers to add diversity to the look of the facades.
