Artfully Combining 2D and 3D image

Artfully Combining 2D and 3D Sasha Vinogradova brings design, illustration and 3D together in Cinema 4D.

Sasha Vinogradova is an art director at The Mill LA where she has worked on a variety of projects, including the title sequence for True Detective S3, the Story of OJ music video, Cashmere Cat music videos, as well as for brands such as Facebook, Sony, Lexus, Bentley, HP and many more.

Prior to joining The Mill, Vinogradova (Instagram @melaamory) was a 3D artist at LA-based creative agency, And Company, where she contributed key art for TV shows and movies, such as The Crown, 12 Monkeys, Tallulah, Tomorrowland, True Detective S2, Marseille.

One of her most recent projects is a short film called Forest, about “small, yellow-bellied forest sprites who make a discovery that threatens the balance of their world.” After her original plan to premiere Forest at this year’s MONSTRA animation festival in Lisbon was derailed by the coronavirus, the film was shown for the first time as part of her presentation for Maxon’s virtual NAB 2020, which can be seen on our YouTube channel.

Tune in, too, to see her presentation, “Creating a Surreal Portrait, Lily of the Valley,” during which she will demonstrate how she combines 2D and 3D in her work. “First, I’m going to project a 2D photo onto sculpted geometry and then break it using Cinema 4D’s Voronoi Fracture,” she says, explaining that from there she will add flowers modeled in 3D and some Megascans before setting up materials and the scene in Redshift.

“Combining 2D and 3D opens up a lot of possibilities, especially for artists who like to see photography in their work,” Vinogradova says. “It can bring an extra layer of realism and complexity without spending too much time.”
